Stalked during my Walk today...

Pardon me if I'm a little less than coherent...I've still got a fair amount of adrenaline pumping through me at the moment...

I take my son out for a walk every day, weather permitting, and today was no exception. We stroll all the way down to the end of our neighborhood, probably about a mile or so. It's a very busy street with lots of cars coming and going, because it's the only entrance/exit to our neighborhood.

The first half of our walk was like any other walk we've taken, but on the second half back, a beige car passed us, driving into the neighborhood. As it was passing, the driver was practically leaning out of his window, staring at me. I though he was going to crack his neck at that angle. I noted it, thought it odd but shrugged it off as no big deal. We kept walking and enjoying the sunshine.

Barely 3 minutes later, the same beige car approached, now going in the opposite direction. He stopped in the road, obviously wanting to talk, or wanting something else. I wasn't interested in finding out. Other cars were driving past him, so I pushed the stroller into someone's yard and walked past, ignoring him and keeping several feet between us. At this point, my radar is going off. Something is not right about this. I'm feeling very wary and alert. After I pass him, I frequently glance over my shoulder and watch him. He drives off slowly, as if he's watching me in his mirror. He goes all the way down to the end of the road, and turns into the tennis court parking lot. Now I know he's going to pass us again.

Fortunately, before I left the house, I got a strong feeling to take my pocket camera with me. I pulled it out, turned it on, and set it in the stroller cup holder, so it wouldn't be too obvious, but could still be angled towards the road, and see everything beside us.
About 3-5 minutes and a few cars later, he does pull up.

(Sorry, at the moment I can only link it to photobucket, because youtube converts it to having this funky tracking issue...Click to watch.)

I really wish I hadn't been so polite. I considered asking him why he wanted to know my name, but I didn't expect him to answer truthfully, and I didn't want to engage in the encounter. I wanted to end it.
Is it possible he was just some curious, harmless guy who wanted to meet a stranger out walking her son? Or were my spidey senses tingling for the right reasons? I guess I'll never really know.

I'll tell you one thing that is for damn sure; I'm GLAD I was armed!!!!!
And if he'd known it, I bet he would have been a little less nosy!

Yeah. My heart is still pounding a bit.

If you need any help convincing your wife, I'll be happy to help!!!

Carrying openly could have saved you the time from having to deal with this creep. My wife and I believe carrying a firearm openly usually deters other people from initiating contact and interacting with an open carrier. When will SC legislatures learn that every state around the SC boarder allows open carrying and blood isn't flowing in the streets in any of those states?

Does your wife, or anyone for that matter, need a permit to exercise the natural right of self defense?

If she doesn't want to carry a firearm with or without a permit, what does she think about martial arts, mace, knives, etc?

I'm glad the result is that you're able to tell the story from the safety of your house. You never know when someone is up to no good. I think your instincts were spot on. Trust them in the future.

Keep an eye out for that vehicle for a while.

WAy to go with being aware of your surroundings...And to be carrying. This is a prime example of something that might have turned bad in a hurry....

mace might be better for her....realy she needs more range time before taking a cwp class but she just does not have much intrest

You need to forward this video to the local police.
I considered calling the police, but there isn't really much to tell them. He didn't verbally or physically threaten me, and I couldn't get a license plate number because he had a dirty, yellowed shield over his tags.

I've considered notifying the HOA at least, but I'm not decided on that yet. We have a lot of houses in our subdivision, and I can't say for sure that this guy was a stranger, or that he wasn't staying with someone.

So glad you are ok.
I don't know that he'd have been able to see an oc weapon while he was driving by so it probably wouldn't have stopped him from doing what he did, or from following you, but it's likely he would have seen it when he stopped to talk to you. Hopefully he would have been scared off instead of had the "girls with guns are sexy" reaction.

If you see him again you should try and get the tag. Even if he doesn't threaten or try to touch you, they can run the tag and see if he has priors, and if so, can talk to him about being on camera.

Many years ago, my wife actually had a guy stop on Remount road, came over to her and grabbed her arm to drag her to his truck. When she screamed, he let go, ran back and took off. Talking to the police later, they told us that was enough for an attempted abduction charge. She saw his green pickup a few weeks later and I followed him onto the interstate while she called the police. Apparently he saw me following behind him and took off. Not wanting to get into or cause a wreck, we watched him go.

She also has pepper spray in her purse and in the center console because another guy tried to break the driver side window when he felt she took too long to make a turn. 30 other cars around her and NO ONE came to her aid as this guy was beating on the window trying to break it.

She didn't like guns then; she does now.

Glad all is well. Staying cool and observant are important. I agree that this video should go to the police so they have a record of this face for identification purposes, possibly for someone else.

Report it anyways. It will be on record. They may even patrol the area a little more. And if seen... around a park, school ...they may make sure that they know their being watch.

You guys make a lot of sense. I will see if I can email the police about the incident, since I won't be able to go in for about a week.

Thanks y'all. You rock!

I live in downtown Charleston so don't find it that strange when I see cars go in circles and then stop to ask me questions. Then again I'm also 6'1, male, and I don't think predators like beard-rash.

I definitely think being on guard was the right decision, whether or not he was up to mischief.
