Gastonia is about 15 miles west of Charlotte. It's where I'm at too.

I am actually in Charlotte.

take I26 to I77 then in Charlotte, take I85 West and follow the signs to Gastonia

It is about a 31/2 to 4 hour drive from Summerville depending on if you stop for gas and breaks.
don't go in traffic time, if you're driving the speed limit on I85 you're considered a road hazzard.
