On a SBR.
Once it is registered as a SBR can I use any length upper on it?
Can I have multiple short barreled uppers?
Can I have 1 SBR, multiple NON SBR rifles and multiple short barreled uppers?

i regestered 1 SBR.

in talking with the BATFE i was told to put an extra piece of paper with the application and list all barrels, with there lengths and calibers. they said if i wanted to get another barrel that was not on that list all i had to do was send an ammended list to them. on my original i tried to cover the bases. 10.5 9mm, 10.5 223, 11.5 223, 5.5 22. it came back approved and the list had all the regerstration numbers and such on it.

with a machine gun you dont have to make a list.

what i want to know is about the ingraving that is supposed to be put on an SBR. i was told (not by the BATFE) name ,city and something has to be ingraved on it but i never found that in any instructions or regulations.

do you know if it is mandatory? and what has to be ingraved on it?

Current thinking has it that you should have available the configuration you registered. Lets say you listed the caliber as 223/5.56 and the barrel length as 10.5", simply make certain you have an upper that meets that spec. Beyond that pin whatever upper you'd like on top and have fun.

Also people smarter than myself suggest you register the SBR with the shortest barrel you expect to use, for example a 22LR barrel that's 5". Now as long as any other set up uses a barrel of 5" or longer you're G2G.

maybe my investigator was just being nit picky but he sent back my papers because i had under caliber....223/5.56.

he said i had to pick a caliber, just one.

like you said though the 22 cal i just put 5.5 cause thats as short as it gets. my 22 barrel is 10.5 so i think thats ok because if i can have a 5.5 i can have a longer one.

just lucky i put 10.5 9mm and thats what i got.

just call and ask. i did and he said note each barrel that would be used.

name thats on form 1 or 4 and city and state .003" deep and 1/16" tall anywhere on the receiver. If the gun is complete and this isnt....Get ready to spend 10 years in club fed if caught.

As for barrel length. Machine guns they could care less if its an 1" long once its a machine gun but according from my inspector directly told to me if you have 10" barrel on your form 1 or 4 and you actually have a 8" barrel on the gun then you are in violation. I was told you can always go longer but never shorter than whats listed on your form.

Now with ALL of the above being said....I spoke to the head agent at Charleston ATF last week about an issue I am having with a prohibited person having an ass of guns and blatantly saying ATF wont do anything about it...DIRECT FROM THE HORSES MOUTH at ATF..."WE ARE SO BACKED UP AND OVERWHELMED RIGHT NOW WE HAVE TWO TIME CONVICTED FELONS WITH THEIR SECOND CHARGE FOR CARRYING A FIREARMS IN CHARLESTON AND THE US ATTORNEY IS LETTING THEM GO"...When I heard that I lost all faith in the justice system. I couldn't believe he told me that. So in the grand scheme of things I don't think they are worried about legal civilians having undersized barrels on registered firearms and engraving on registered receivers. BUT I COULD BE WRONG.

Henry, I believe that they are actually more concerned with a law abiding civvy not having the proper paperwork in place, the. They are about actually keeping guns away from those who should actually have them

The sad truth is most LEO's (federal and local) don't know what is required in the way of markings and paperwork. I'm not knocking them it's simply not a high priority issue for them.

The LEO's that have requested to review my paperwork have not even checked the weapon to confirm it's a serial number match mush less make certain it's marked with the proper mfg markings!!!

Damn Henry you mean I can't give them the wrong paperwork in hopes that they actually do their job and inspect the weapon! Where's the fun in that.....................
