If someone breaks into your home while your at the dinner table with your family. What do you consider is appropriate. Deadly force or retreat?

In my opinion it is "deadly force". Why? I do not have a garage. My cars are parked and in plain view from the street or my back yard. The person who would try this has to understand that we are home. This means that the invader is knowing that people are in the house. He is intending harm and at minimum to try and restrain me with force. That intent is usually accompanied by a weapon. I would firmly implement shock and awe upon them.

I would like to hear what you think and reasoning for or against. Be mature about the conversation. No "I would put a cap in his...".

Anyone breaking into my house will be met with deadly force, no apoligies to anyone. I have family and kids in the house and my intent is to prevent harm to anyone I am resposbile for. If somone is braking in as far as I am concerned they are capable to casue harm, in the old days you would expect some thug to act reasonably and retreat when confronted. In todays world the thugs don't retreat and have shown a tendency to kill or wound without thought, so the reasonable person should think that any home invasion or any nature is going to end badly...hopefully for the thug. IMHO that is.

Absolutely deadly force. I'm not saying I would purposely attempt to take the perpetrator's life; I would shoot to stop the threat. If stopping that threat results in him/her dying...so be it. That's called consequence. The problem with choosing flight instead of fight (at least, to me) is:
1. Running excites predators.
2. It encourages predators because they meet no resistance.
3. If you run every time, eventually you will run out of places to retreat to.

So yes, deadly force.

You come into my house...I will do my best to make sue you are carried out..

If you break in, you have nothing but bad intentions. You are going to do whatever it takes to have your way with my stuff. You don't care if is people pets or my possessions...

I will not say" I will try to wound him, Or, scare him so he will leave"...He might just come back with help. I will do everything in my power to stop him cold...

No question about it. You come in my house w/o permission, you will not walk/run/crawl out. I might give them a chance to surrender like the Seals did to Bin Laden, but my guess is they won't/can't surrender quick enough. They will promptly be given a double tap COM and a DT to the melon.

If they have the balls to come in my house, they have earned the right to stay (until the coroner comes)

I would do whatever it takes to make them stop, up to and including deadly force.
Now here's a question. Do you keep a weapon at hand while you're at home? Onyour person or tucked away near by?

I have protection where I spend most of my time...

I don't have a gun in the bathroom...but....about everywhere else.

I also keep stuff up stairs in case I am there...

If I'm outside, I have one with me 90% of the time. In the house, I'm not far from one at any given point.

I most definetly agree with the ruling...you are in a place you are supposed to be and the intruder is not. You have a right to protect your family...i will do what is necessary to protect my 2 yr old.

Russell...just a little FYI...I like your collection of firearms, just be careful, the criminals out there might like them as well. I would be hesitant to post your inventory to the open public. Although most of us in here know what we all have, but that has been over time.

I work from home most of the time. I am usually carry in the house. Home invasions have been on the rise in my neighborhood.

Did every miss the poll? The majority did NOT believe in using deadly force.

Point taken. However, most of them are locked away. And they would have to get past the alarm, the dog, and my wife.

I also work from home alone all day (and yes, a loaded firearm is always close by) and I have to tell you that especially as a female, if someone is breaking into my home, I can only assume the fear trigger would be great enough to do what needed to be done to stop the threat. I'd never say I'd outright kill someone, especially in a public, non-secure forum (never know when Big Brother is looking these days), but I also refuse to ever be a victim of any sort again. It's also hard for me to talk about the law since doing so is muddy waters since I am a paralegal and heaven forbid someone think I am spouting off legal advice since that would be a federal offense and, of course, lead to being unemployed; but I will say that we are all very fortunate to live in the state we do as many other states have very unprotective castle doctrines.

One is always in reach and my wife has hers in the bedroom. She would retreat to there if possible and fort up and dial 911. I would do my utmost to save her the trauma of taking someone out.
