An attempt to steal a pressure washer from a St. Helena Island resident ended with the alleged culprit's passenger being held at gunpoint by the homeowner and the pressure washer falling out of the vehicle as the suspect drove away.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is looking for Sherman Myers, 41, of St. Helena, who is accused in an attempted robbery Wednesday at a home on Vaux Road.

Deputies arrived at about 1:30 p.m. to find the homeowner holding a female suspect at gunpoint, said a sheriff's news release Thursday.

The homeowner saw an unfamiliar SUV parked in front of his home and a man loading a pressure washer from the garage into the vehicle, which had a female passenger, according to the release. The homeowner grabbed a shotgun and confronted them.

The woman got out of the SUV. The man jumped in and drove off, and the pressure washer fell out, the release said.

The homeowner held the woman at gunpoint while he called 911 and waited for deputies. She was charged with trespassing.

The man, later identified as Myers, is still at large, the release said. He faces one count of second-degree burglary.

He was described as black, about 5-feet-8 and 225 pounds. He was last seen driving a dark blue 2003 Mazda Tribute SUV.

Anyone with information should call the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office at (843) 255-3421 or the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at (843) 524-2777.
