I just picked me up a Mosin and will have to start hunting down 7.62X54R ammo. I got a tuna can to start with, but I was looking for ideas on where to get more once I run through all of this. Reloads? More tuna cans?
I bought 880 rounds from these guys. Cheaper than anyone I've seen locally even with shipping. I was amazed when I saw people trying to sell 1 can for over $100 at the gun shows.
If you are in Tega Cay, try the next Dixie Gun & Knife show in Charlotte. I got my Mosin there and the ammo was cheap. Mosin was cheap also, $98.00. That was last fall.
AIM Surplus, J&G sales, Ammo2Go has it, but you have to pay shipping.
Believe we have a sponsor that has it (SCGUNS), they are near Greer.
Best price I have seen recently is $69.99 per can of 440 rounds.
FMJ is definitely not what you want for hunting. Still, soft points are available for a low price of about $6.99 for 20 rounds.
Also, a lot of surplus is available for these rifles. The "Tuna cans" can be corrosive too, just not as much. Be sure you clean asap after shooting it. It can rust your weapon quickly in this humid climate. Hot water or Windex works. Just wipe it all down, run some patches down the barrel, wait a bit for it to dry then clean and oil as normal. The water in the Windex will rinse the salts out and the ammonia will help by causing the copper build up to tarnish and come loose. You'll notice your patches coming out green after awhile, that is the copper tarnish. Hoppes#9 will also neutralize the nitrate salts (says so on the bottle).
