Feel-good nonsense.

One of countless reminders that the only enemy any government has is her own citizenry. All governments gain power at the expense of their population's loss of freedom. This is typical and expected if you've paid any kind of attention to the car industry over the past 80 years or so. Headlights, seatbelts, airbags, "crumple zones", child locks, et al.

How long until OnStar is nationalized and is mandatory on all new US cars? The EU will make their own version. Then you'll need a thumbprint or retinal scan to enter and exit the vehicle. That way they can document and catalog your entire day. "Bob, Suzie and James entered the vehicle at 8:03AM. They drove from XYZ location to ZYX location and at 9:15AM Stephen entered the vehicle and James exited. Seventeen minutes later there was a bomb detonation half a block away. Arrest all of them for this suspicious behavior."

It's called Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA)?

Under the proposals new cars would be fitted with cameras that could read road speed limit signs and automatically apply the brakes when this is exceeded.

Awesome plan. No scofflaw will ever figure out how to bypass or block the lens of a camera so it can't read the signs. Mine would have a lens cover on it that read "Speed Limit Warp 5".

What happens when your camera misreads the speed limits that says 100 KPH as 10 KPH and brings your car to a screeching halt in the middle of the motorway?

Or when some college kids having fun decide to put a 1km speed limit sign on the side of the road or 160? It's not just the cars that could be messed with.
